Earth Hour 2012 was officially held around the world on 31 Mar 2012 (last Saturday of March). Come every year, the event will be highly commercialized on that day to celebrate the dark moment (this year at Orchard Road). As for me, the message of switching off non-essential lights is already deep-rooted in my daily life.
My Beyond Earth Hour Challenge finally ended on 3 Jul 2012 (from mid May 2012), accumulating more than 500 hrs savings of electricity (12 hrs every night from about 6.45pm to 6.45am). The corridor light (just outside my family unit) comes back to life after 40-50 days, and once again brings back that nice and warm feeling outside the front gate. All is not gone yet, as the clock is still counting for few broken down lights at lift lobby and rubbish chute.
Under normal circumstances, any out-of-order light will be replaced within 3 days, as any dark spot will be too difficult to be missed for too long. However, having light down may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. When a staircase light is down, there will be less rubbish/ cigarette ash/ butt/ box around the dark area, as the happy goers look for brighter spot elsewhere.
The next concerns the lights for the rubbish chute, being the popular playground for cockroaches/ lizards and other disgusting stuff. The residents have ample time of 4-5 hrs (before 12 midnight) to dispose their rubbish every night, or not mind holding on to some rubbish at home till morning.
Any taker, if technically feasible, bother to make a small difference by switching off the unnecessary rubbish chute lights (after 12 midnight)?
